We’re seven games into the Premier League, and heaps of goals have already been scored. Some players haven’t hit the ground running yet, but the league’s elite goalscorers have already begun to hit the back of the net.
Let’s take a look at the top contenders for the golden boot award
Sergio Aguero
You can’t have a top scorers list without Aguero on it. The Argentine striker is right up there amongst Europe’s best strikers. When in a rich vein of form, he’s arguably the best centre-forward in the Premier League as few players can match his attacking impetus.
He’s currently Manchester City’s leading man regarding goals this season having already bagged five goals. If Aguero can stay injury free for the rest of the season he’ll undoubtedly reach the 25 goal mark, but will that be enough to win him the golden boot ?
Aguero is an all-rounder when it comes to hitting the back of the net – he scores all types of goals from tap-ins to solo runs and whatnot. Aguero will surely benefit a great deal from David Silva and Kevin De Byrne's creativity with the latter already chipping in with four assists in the league.
Romelu Lukaku
Lukaku has had an excellent start to the season under Everton’s new boss, Ronald Koeman, as many had expected him to.
The Belgium international has scored four goals for the Toffees, and it seems like he’s set to challenge for the golden boot.
Consistency has always been a problem for Lukaku as he tends to switch off on some occasions, but when he’s on form he scores a flurry of goals.
New arrival Yannick Bolasie will boost Lukaku’s odds of securing the golden boot award - the ex-Crystal Palace winger is quite adept at creating chances for his teammates hence leaving Lukaku with a myriad of opportunities to convert into goals.
Diego Costa
Costa is more or less the most hated man in the English top flight as a result of his aggressive style of play. Despite his status in the Premier League, he has won the hearts of Chelsea fans around the world due to his efficiency in the attacking third.
The Brazil-born forward currently sits atop the goalscoring charts with six goals. Aggression is proving to be a key weapon in Costa’s arsenal as it’s helped him to get the better of a handful of defenders this term.
There are some concerns about Costa potentially getting suspended with the Spain international being the centre of attention for referees this season.
So far, he’s yet to receive a red card, but all that could change very quickly if he fails to maintain gentlemanly conduct on the pitch.
Alexis Sanchez
Sanchez has seemingly assumed the mantle of Arsenal’s central striker having featured up front for the Gunners for the most of the season.
Giroud is apparently out-of-favour at the Emirates with Sanchez now featuring as a centre-forward for Arsenal. Sanchez has been ever present for the North London outfit ever since he arrived from Barcelona.
Naturally a winger, Sanchez has so far lit up the Premier League with his impressive showings in the number 9 role. The Chile international has scored four league goals this season, and by the looks of things, he’ll add to his tally as the season unfolds.
Arsenal looks set to challenge for the title as they currently sit in third place in the league table, If Sanchez can continue his string of brilliant performances then Wenger’s side will be right up there at the end of the season.
Harry Kane
It’s a bit mind-boggling to think that Harry Kane has amassed just two goals this season judging by his exploits last season. But if we’ve learnt anything from Kane in the past, it’s to not write him off due to a profligate spell in front of goal.
The young Englishman began last season on a goal drought but ended up claiming the golden boot award following a goal-laden season which saw him hit the back of the net on 25 occasions.
It’s worth noting that history has a tendency of repeating itself in the Premier League hence Kane is still in with a shout of being named the highest goalscorer once the season draws to a close.
