The Transfer Series: Players Everton Needs To Sign In January

Everton was shambolic last season as Roberto Martinez led the Merseyside outfit to 11th place on the Premier League table. After a disappointing campaign, Martinez was sacked, and Ronald Koeman was named the new manager in a bid to get Everton into the Europa League this season.

So far, Everton has looked decent, although, a lack of depth in the attacking third is evident and also, they looked weak defensively against Chelsea as they conceded five goals and scored none.

Lukaku is Everton’s biggest threat going forward with Bolasie also capable of doing damage to the opposition. There’s only one consistent performer at Everton, and that’s the Belgian, who seems primed for an exit in the summer with top teams keen on signing him, hence with that in mind, Let’s take a look at three players Everton needs to sign in January;

Memphis Depay

Depay’s arrival at Manchester United was greeted with a lot of expectation, which as we all know, he failed to live up to, despite coming off the back of a stellar season at PSV.

Ronald Koeman has apparently seen past Depay’s poor spell at Manchester United as the Dutch gaffer is keen on signing his fellow countryman in the January transfer window.

A move to Everton will be beneficial to both Depay and Everton as it would give the Netherlands international a chance to rekindle his career, and it would provide Everton with more quality up front.

There’s no question mark surrounding Depay’s ability to play at the highest level, although, his confidence seems shaken by his inability to break into United’s first-team set-up.

Should he sign for Everton, he’ll probably be utilized on the left-wing in place of Kevin Mirallas who after a bright start to the season, has fallen by the wayside.

Depay’s best on-pitch memory in a United shirt to date came against Club Brugge last season as Depay scored two sublime goals. Since then he’s been unable to produce performances of that ilk, but if he finds form at Everton, he’ll undoubtedly become one of their most important players.

Manolo Gabbiadini

Napoli forward Manolo Gabbiadini could be available in the January transfer window with the striker seemingly interested in a move elsewhere.

Everton attempted to sign him during the summer transfer window’s deadline day, but Napoli refused to sanction a move due to a shortage of options in the attacking third.

So far, though, Gabbiadini has been on the fringes at Napoli; hence he’s keen on leaving the club to get some first team football.

Koeman needs to sign a quality striker capable of producing the goods when called upon, and in light of Lukaku’s potential exit from the club, Gabbiadini could prove to be a quality replacement.

Lamine Kone

Everton’s 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea highlighted their defensive problems and more or less confirmed the fact that the Toffee’s need to spend in January in a bid to keep their European aspirations alive.

Ronald Koeman could look to Sunderland defender, Lamine Kone, to help out in defense seeing as the team’s backline is currently on struggling.

Everton made a £16m bid for the centre-back in the summer, but Sunderland was quick to dismiss the bid seeing as Kone is a key player in the team - all that is expected to change in January, with David Moyes reportedly keen on acquiring the services of Croatian defender Domagoj Vida from Dynamo Kiev.

If Moyes manages to pull off the transfer, then it will undoubtedly pave the way for Everton to make another bid for Kone.
