Spurs attack

Premier League: Spurs attack is quite devastating

The race for the Premier League title is down to a two horse race between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. However, Spurs have turned the screw on their goalscoring instincts. Spurs attack is one that constantly gets fans of Lillywhites cheering in ecstasy. With just a few points behind the Premier League leaders, Spurs has a devastating attack that just can’t stop scoring.

This season, Tottenham Hotspur has been one team that doesn’t struggle to create chances or score goals. In the thirty-one Premier League games they’ve played this season, they’ve only failed to score on four occasions. In eleven of those thirty-one matches, they’ve scored three or more goals. That’s the hallmark of a team with incredible attacking prowess.

Although both Liverpool and Chelsea have scored sixty-eight and sixty-five goals respectively, as opposed to Tottenham’s sixty-four, the Lillywhites can hold their heads up high for keeping their goalscoring streak on, even without the services of their goal-machine in the mode of Harry Kane. Kane was injured for close to seven weeks in mid-September with the same ankle ligament problem that has kept him out of action lately. This season, Spurs have been without their key man for eight Premier League games, but have managed to win five of those.

Goals win games and Spurs sure can score. It’s not surprising that only league leaders, Chelsea, has won more games (24) than Spurs (20).

Spurs attack is made wonderful by three key men

Spurs attack has been one hell of a terror due to the superb form of an attacking triumvirate that consists of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Son Heung-Min. Between them, they’ve scored a massive forty-six league goals, same as the entire Manchester United team. In fact, only five Premier League teams (Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Everton) have scored more goals than these three players.

Harry Kane has led the attack line for Spurs once again this season. Kane has been a key player for Spurs over the past three years. He’s been bedevilled by that nibbling ankle injury, but it hasn’t prevented him from scoring 24 goals this season, nineteen of those in the Premier League. Last season he was superb for Spurs and won the Premier League Golden Shoe. His impact on the the Tottenham team was likened to Lionel Messi’s by Spurs manager, Mauricio Pochettino:

“There is no doubting that Harry is our best player. It’s like with Barcelona – Messi is injured for one month but Barcelona are still winning. Then, Messi is available again..."

Although Harry Kane is back for Spurs after the injury he suffered in early March, guys like Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli had stepped up in his absence. Dele Alli for one is having one of his best goalscoring seasons for Spurs. The 20-year-old Englishman has already scored nineteen goals this season, sixteen in the Premier League. His form for Spurs has seen him become a first-team regular with the Three Lions.

For his part, Son Heung-Min is also having his best season in England. With 18 goals to show, eleven in the league, Son helped ensure that Spurs did not sorely miss Harry Kane. The former Hamburg and Bayer Leverkusen attacker has staked a claim to a regular spot in Pochettino’s starting xi.

The impressive goal return of the aforementioned trio has shifted the spotlight from last summer signings, Vincent Janssen and Moussa Sissoko who have both flopped terribly. Sissoko is yet to score for Spurs in twenty-nine appearances and Vincent Janssen has only scored once for Spurs from open play in thirty-four games.

Christian Ericksen – the man creating it all for Spurs attack

Christian Ericksen has provided 11 league assists for Spurs
One reason why Tottenham’s attack has been in devastating form this season is the undeniable effect of the Danish midfield wizard, Christian Ericksen. The 25-year-old former Ajax man has been a major orchestrator for Tottenham this season. Ericksen has created 88 chances and provided eleven assists in the league for Spurs this term. Ericksen has scored ten times for Tottenham, seven times in the Premier League.

Christian Ericksen has been the man who makes Tottenham’s attack look so seamless. He brings everyone into the play and can carve open any opposition with a simple defence-splitting pass. On many occasions, Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli have benefited from Ericksen’s sheer brilliance.

Mauricio Pochettino has created a team that can confidently challenge for the Premier League title. They’ve done so for the past two seasons now. This season, Spurs attack has been a major driving force for their title push.
