La Liga Matchday 16 Roundup: Atletico Madrid Back to Winning Ways

Atletico Madrid got back to winning ways as they grabbed a 1-0 win over Las Palmas during the weekend, courtesy of a goal from Saul Niguez. The Madrid outfit sits in 6th place in the league standings and it’s fair to say that they’re out of the title race.

Villarreal also continued their excellent run of form against Sporting Gijon with a 3-1 win courtesy of goals from Jonathan dos Santos, Nicola Sansone and Alexandre Pato. Carlos Carmona struck home in the 89th minute to make his side’s defeat less embarrassing.

Friday night’s fixture saw Alaves pick up the three points against Real Betis through a Deyverson strike while Granada were beaten 2-0 by Real Sociedad who’s uprising in the league has attracted some attention around Europe. Jon Bautista and Juanmi were on target for Sociedad.

Sevilla kept pace with Barca in what looks to be the race for 2nd place following their 4-1 thumping of Malaga. Luciano Vietto scored a brace while Ben Yedder and Vitolo were also on the scoresheet. Sandro Ramirez scored a consolation goal for Malaga in the 64th minute.

Barcelona also won 4-1 against Espanyol with Luis Suarez scoring a brace – Messi and Jordi Alba also converted strikes of their own. David Lopez was responsible for Espanyol’s lone goal.

Elsewhere, Deportivo La Coruna proved too much to handle for Osasuna as the home side grabbed a 2-0 win courtesy of a 7th-minute strike from Florin Andone and Ryan Babel’s 42nd-minute goal.

Leganes and Eibar played out a 1-1 draw with goals from Guerrero and Bebe cancelling each other out.

Monday night’s fixture saw Athletic Bilbao secure a much-needed win over Celta Vigo. Iago Aspas opened the scoring in the 54th-minute, but goals from Aritz Aduriz and Mikel San Jose helped Bilbao to the three points.
