Serie A Matchday 30 Roundup: Juventus Stopped in their Tracks by Napoli

Serie A leaders Juventus were forced to share the spoils with Napoli on Sunday.

Maurizio Sarri’s men drew inspiration from the crowd as they put up a scintillating display in front of their home supporters, but it culminated in just one goal for the Naples outfit from the in-form Marek Hamsik.

Gonzalo Higuain failed to come up with the goals on his return to his old stomping ground, but that didn’t stop Juve from finding the back of the net as Sami Khedira stepped up in the 7th-minute to give the Bianconeri an early lead.

Napoli outclassed Juventus for significant periods in the game, and they finally had their breakthrough when Hamsik found the back of the net in the 60th-minute.

The result was favorable for AS Roma as it reduced Juventus’ gap over them to 6 points while also increasing the Rome outfit’s gap over Napoli to 4 points.

Roma capitalized on their title rivals’ draw with a 2-0 victory at home to Empoli. Luciano Spaletti’s side now have a real chance of usurping Juventus’ throne judging by the fact that they’re just 6 points behind the league leaders with 8 games still to be played before the season ends.

Edin Dzeko bagged a brace against Empoli to help his side secure a much-needed win.

Genoa and Atalanta were involved in the weekend’s most one-sided affair as the latter won 5-0 away at Stadio Luigi Ferraris.

Chelsea transfer target Andrea Conti kicked-off the scoring in the 25th-minute before two goals from Alejandro Gomez took Atalanta’s tally up to three.

Genoa's Mauricio Pinilla was sent-off as his side's chances of staging a comeback continued to grow bleaker. Mattia Caldara notched a goal in the 76th-minute, and Alejandro Gomez rounded off the scoring (and his hat-trick) with a goal inside the final 10 minutes of normal time.

Atalanta sits in 5th place in the Serie A standings. They’re 2 points behind 4th-placed Lazio who also managed to grab a win in the weekend.

Sassuolo played host to Lazio on Friday night as the latter sought to grab a win in their quest to finish within the top three.

Goals from Ciro Immobile and Andrea Consigli (own goal) helped Lazio to the 2-1 victory while Domenico Berardi scored Sassuolo’s consolation goal.

Andrea Belotti continued his impressive scoring form against Udinese, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for Torino as both sides drew 2-2.

After a goalless first half, Jakub Jankto opened the scoring for a Udinese in the 50th-minute, and Stipe Perica doubled Udinese's lead 18 minutes later.

Emiliano Moretti started the fightback for Torino with a goal in the 70th-minute before Belotti slotted home in the 83rd-minute to help his side to a point.

Giancarlo Gonzalez scored Palermo’s solitary goal as they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at home to Cagliari.

Artur Ionita bagged a brace, and Marco Borriello got on the scoresheet for Cagliari against Palermo.

Rock-bottom Pescara held AC Milan to a 1-1 draw on Sunday. As expected, Milan dominated possession, but as usual, they failed to turn their dominance into a win.

Gabriel Paletta’s early own goal put Pescara in front before Mario Pasalic scored in the 41st-minute.

AC Milan are 4 points away from a Europa League place which appears to be their current aim because a top-three finish is somewhat out of their reach at the moment.

Elsewhere, Khouma Babacar scored the only goal as Fiorentina won 1-0 at home to Bologna. They created quite a number of chances, but at the end of the day, La Viola only converted one, which proved to be the match-winner.

Crotone picked up three points away at Chievo Verona thanks to goals from Giammarco Ferrari and Diego Facinelli. Sergio Pellisier was responsible for Chievo;s consolation goal.

Inter Milan suffered a huge setback on Monday night following their 2-1 defeat to Sampdoria. Danilo D’Ambrosio opened the scoring for Inter before goals from Patrik Schick and Fabio Quagliarella helped Sampdoria to win the tie.
