Leroy Sane

Leroy Sane signs for City, could spell end of Sterling

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of Leroy Sane from Schalke 04 for a transfer fee believed to be around £37m.

After days of speculation, the German international became City’s fifth signing of the summer after he signed a five-year contract with the Manchester club.

The 20-year-old is considered one of the best young talents in German football at the moment and had been on top of Pep Guardiola’s priority list for quite some time.

Sane is a versatile player who can play on either wing and also as a number 10.

He joined Schalke as a nine-year-old in 2005. However, he moved to Bayer Leverkusen in 2008. After spending three years at Leverkusen, he once again signed for Schalke in 2011.

He made his senior debut in 2013-14, but the real breakthrough came through next season when he scored three goals in 13 Bundesliga appearances. He announced his arrival on the big stage during the 2015-16 season as he scored eight goals in 33 league appearances and also earned a call-up to the German national team.

After signing for City, he told ManCity.com: “I feel really good, I’m happy to be here and happy that it has all worked out. Now I can settle here in Manchester and play for City.

“One of the reasons I decided to join City was Pep Guardiola; he convinced me to come here and that I can continue to progress. I know I will learn a lot under him and now I can take the next step in my career.

“I followed Pep at Barcelona and at Bayern where he achieved a lot and worked really well with young players.

“I think he can make me a more complete player. I think I will need a bit of time to start with because it’s another league and there’s a different style of play, but I think I can adapt very quickly.”

Sane is expected to compete with the likes of David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri, and Raheem Sterling for a spot in Pep Guardiola’s squad next season.

Former Liverpool and City star Dietmar Hamman feels that the arrival of Sane could spell trouble for a number of City stars, especially Raheem Sterling.

Both players are expected to compete for the same spot in Guardiola’s first team, and Hamman thinks that Sterling has stalled in his progress following his big-money move from Liverpool.

Sterling, who signed for City for £49m last summer, managed six goals in 31 league appearances last season.

Hamman told Sky Sports: “If you look at the forward line they will probably play with one up top which will be Aguero. Behind you’ve got David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne who, when he is fit, will play,” said Hamann.

“Then I think he’ll probably come up against Raheem Sterling and, I’ve got to say, Raheem Sterling has pretty much stalled since he went to Manchester City.

“He’s never showed the promise he showed at Liverpool earlier in his career, so I think Sterling will be the one who needs to pick it up.

“I think he will improve under Pep Guardiola – Leroy Sane said it himself – the biggest pull for him to come to Manchester City was to work with a manager who he knows will improve him.”
