La Liga Matchday 24 Roundup: Real Madrid Pull Through

Real Madrid were nearly unseated by Barcelona during the weekend following Barca’s 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid.

Madrid, though, reclaimed top spot after a hard-fought win over Villarreal. Manu Trigueros and Cedric Bakambu put Villarreal in front before the hour mark which certainly left Real Madrid’s players and supporters alike in disbelief.

It seemed to be the beginning of the end for Los Blancos as they looked poised to suffer a second defeat in the space of five days, but as Madrid have already done many times this term, they came back from behind and won the game.

Goals from Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Alvaro Morata saw Madrid grab the three points in what turned out to be a 3-2 victory for Zidane’s men.

Madrid still have a game in hand which will come in handy as they look to extend their gap at the summit.

Barcelona sat atop the league table for a few hours last night after difficult victory at Estadio Vincente Calderon.

Atletico Madrid, as we know, are no pushovers. Rafinha opened the scoring for Barcelona in the second half after a goalless first 45. The breakthrough, though, was only met with more resilience from Atletico as Diego Godin put a goal past Marc-Andre Ter Stegen in the 70th-minute.

Whilst a draw was on the cards, with Lionel Messi still making strides on the pitch, Barcelona didn’t give up in trying to steal a win.

Messi eventually scored the winner in dramatic fashion for the Blaugrana in the 86th-minute.

Real Sociedad edged closer to fourth place with a win at Estadio de Gran Canaria against Las Palmas.

The away side managed to nick one goal, and that goal was all it took to secure the victory over Las Palmas. Xabier Prieto was the scorer of the game’s lone goal as Real Sociedad now sits just one point behind Atletico Madrid.

Eibar recovered from their defeat to Sevilla in emphatic fashion as they grabbed a 3-0 win over Malaga on Saturday.

Adrian Gonzalez opened the scoring late in the first half before scoring a well-struck penalty early in the second half.

In-form Sergi Enrich rounded off the scoring with a sublime effort two minutes after Adrian Gonzalez completed his brace.

Sevilla sit three points behind Real Madrid and two behind Barcelona after maintaining their presence in the title race with a 2-1 win over Real Betis.

Riza Durmisi gave Betis the lead in the first half through a sublime free-kick.

Steven N’Zonzi brought Petros down 25 yards away from Sevilla’s goal, thus, giving away a free-kick which Durmisi converted into a goal.

The second half saw Gabriel Mercado score the equaliser for Sevilla after latching on to a rebound from Real Betis’ goalkeeper Antonio Adan – a Free-kick from Samir Nasri set the pace for the goal.

Another set-piece from Nasri had the same effect with N’zonzi laying the ball on for Vincente Iborra to score.

Valencia suffered a disheartening defeat away at Alaves. Carlos Soler put Valencia in front in the second 45 before an eight-minute double from Ibai Gomez and Aleksander Katai late in the game saw Valencia lose the tie.

Elsewhere, Leganes grabbed a 4-0 win over Deportivo thanks to goals from Alexander Szymanowski, Martin Mantovani, Unai Lopez and Alberto Bueno whilst Espanyol also thumped Osasuna courtesy of Felipe Caicedo, Jose Manuel Jurado and Gerard Moreno.

Sporting Gijon and Celta Vigo played out a 1-1 draw at Estadio El Molinon. The opening goal came via Gijon’s Moi Gomez who scored a penalty.

Iago Aspas scored Celta’s equaliser in the 75th-minute as both sides shared the spoils.

Goals from Markel Susaeta, Inigo Lekue and Mikel San Jose saw Athletic Bilbao grab a much-needed win over Granada.

Granada managed to nick a consolation goal courtesy of Mehdi Carcela-Gonzalez.
