Real Madrid showed their class as Zidane’s men completed the 5-1 thumping of Legia Warsaw in Champions League Matchday 3. Gareth Bale bagged his first Champions League goal since 2014 with a well-struck curler in the 16th minute; the goal was then followed by an own goal by Tomasz Jodlowiec.
Surprisingly enough Cristiano Ronaldo failed to get on the scoresheet with Marco Asensio, Alvaro Morata and Lucas Vazquez completing the scoring for the La Liga giants.
Asensio’s strike came after Miroslav Radovic clawed one back for Legia through a penalty – Lucas Vazquez came on to score a deftly executed volley while Morata scored the game’s final goal.
The win sees Real Madrid sit below Dortmund at second place in the Group F standings following the German outfit’s 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon – It’s worth noting that the German outfit leads Madrid by goal difference (10/9).
Both of Dortmund’s goals came in the first-half thanks to strikes from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Julian Weigl. Bruno Cesar pulled one back for the Portuguese side, but it failed to materialise into a real fightback.
Juan Cuadrado was the hero of the day at Lyon following 10-man Juventus’ emphatic away win over the French side. Cuadrado scored the game’s lone goal in the 76th minute despite Lyon’s dominance.
Gianluigi Buffon made some spectacular saves which helped to keep Juventus in the game, including stopping a penalty from Alexandre Lacazette.
Samir Nasri’s goal put Sevilla level on points with Juventus in Group H as the Spanish outfit managed to secure a 1-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb.
Dinamo remains the only team in the Champions League this year yet to register a goal.
Group E saw Monaco retain top spot after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with CSKA Moscow. Lacina Traore scored against his parent club, Monaco, with Bernardo Silva proving t be Monaco’s saving grace. Elsewhere in Group E, Leverkusen and Tottenham played out a goalless draw.
Portuguese wonderkid Andre Silva converted a late penalty to secure a 2-1 victory for Porto against Belgian side, Club Brugge. Jelle Vossen put Club Brugge in front in the 12th minute before Miguel Layun scored the equaliser in the 68th minute. Silva’s penalty came in the 90th minute.
Leicester also secured their third Champions League victory in a row against FC Copenhagen. It’s worth noting that the Foxes are yet to concede in the Champions League after three outings. Riyad Mahrez proved to be Leicester’s saving grace last night as he scored the winner at the King Power Stadium.
