Daniel Sturridge

5 Possible Destinations For Daniel Sturridge In The Summer.

Once proclaimed as the golden boy of Anfield, Daniel Sturridge’s career has taken a dramatic turn over the past few years. Injury after injury has hampered the Englishman’s development as well as marking him as a risk in the mind of Jürgen Klopp. Even when fit, it’s clear that the German has his reservations about the abilities of Sturridge. Perhaps the lengthy setbacks have made him forget how talented a player the striker is.

At the age of 27, Daniel Sturridge is fast entering his peak years as a footballer. With time running out, it’d be more in Sturridge’s interest to move this summer whilst his stock is still relatively high. Personally, I feel the Englishman could fit into any side on the planet. However, in football, we must be realistic and assess the options from the club and player’s point of view.

Here are 5 potential destinations for Daniel Sturridge.

#5 Everton

Romelu Lukaku

Lukaku has scored 21 league goals this season, Sturridge has scored 2

This may not sit very well with many Liverpool fans but Sturridge has to do what’s best for his career. In reality, the 27-year old owes nothing to the Anfield faithful. Many Liverpool fans have viciously got on his back after several injury setbacks. Throughout the abuse, the 27-year old has retained dignity and class, constantly working hard to regain full fitness.

With Romelu Lukaku seemingly on his way out of Goodison Park, Sturridge should see Everton as an opportunity to become loved & adored by a loyal fanbase. Under the tutelage of Ronald Koeman, Everton have ascended to a team on the verge of breaking the top four. The coup of Daniel Sturridge would be a real statement of intent from the Dutchman and possibly a sign of things to come.

#4 AS Monaco

Monaco have scored 77 league goals this season

As the best attacking team in Europe, AS Monaco is an offensive player’s dream move at the moment. Leonardo Jardim has got his young French team playing with an intensity not seen before in Ligue 1. Last month they also proved that it’s not just in France they can play well in, by knocking out Pep Guardiola’s multi-million-pound team. Monaco play in a wide 4-3-3 which gives the front three the freedom to interchange as they please. Daniel Sturridge displays all the qualities to compliment the likes of Kylian Mbappe and Radamel Falcao.

However, Real Madrid are reported to be very interested in Kylian Mbappe, meaning Sturridge may be the one to play wide right in the attack. The position of inverted winger would allow Sturridge better passing options on the inside, more variety in beating a defender 1v1 and better access to goal through cut-ins. Jardim would most definitely bring out the best in the 27-year old and take him to new heights on the world stage.

#3 Atlético Madrid

Antoine Griezmann

Griezmann has scored 14 league goals this season

What Diego Simeone has achieved at the Vicente Calderon has been nothing short of amazing. Taking the red & whites to several Champions League finals and a La Liga title has raised his stock immensely. The man has been able to take average players like Fernando Torres & Koke to exceptional levels of performance. If he could do that with them, imagine what the man could do with Daniel Sturridge.

Atlético Madrid usually play in a robust 4-4-2 system that relies on defensive positioning and the cutting off of passing lanes. Simeone would train Daniel up to be more disciplined off the ball as well as possessing a higher work rate. Sturridge would also be deployed in a front two pairing with Antoine Griezmann. This would spell danger for any defence in the world, the two would occupy opposing defenders as well as drag them out of position. Daniel Sturridge would also get to experience a less physical league in the La Liga, meaning he could show more of his exceptional technical attributes.

#2 Arsenal

alexis sanchez

Alexis Sanchez has been involved in 27 league goals this season

Ever since the triple S (Sturridge-Suarez-Sterling) days, Arsenal fans have wanted to see the Englishman at the Emirates. Arsène Wenger has always been a long-time admirer of Daniel. It’s only his injury record that has seemingly stopped a move to North London. However, this summer may finally be the window that the Gunners land England’s best striker.

Sturridge is a player that links up well with others even if he’s on the wing or as the focal point of an attack. Wenger as a coach always encourages his players to positionally interchange throughout the 90 minutes, Daniel already does that. The 27-year old has electric pace, silky ball control, an eye for goal and an exquisite first touch. Sturridge seems like the perfect fit for Wengerball and Arsenal’s gaping hole up front seems like the perfect fit for Daniel.

#1 Borussia Dortmund

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

English players always get lambasted for their refusal to play abroad. Many feel that English nationals could learn so much more in foreign leagues. The Bundesliga is a highly energised league that focuses more on defensive positioning & counter attacking than physical duels.

With Pierre Aubameyang seemingly on his way to the bright lights of Madrid, Thomas Tuchel is desperately scouring Europe for a suitable replacement. To be the focal point of Tuchel’s Dortmund, you need pace, positional awareness, composure and technique. Daniel Sturridge fits that bill seamlessly. Pierre will probably leave for around £70m - £80m, leaving Dortmund ample amounts of funds to prize Sturridge away from Anfield.

For Sturridge, he gets to work with a world class manager at a famous team in a well-respected league. As well as that, Dortmund can offer the Englishman Champions League football, something Liverpool can’t.
