Xavi Simons

What makes Barcelona youngster Xavi Simons special?

Barcelona wonder-kid, Xavi Simons, may only be 14 but is more famous than most professional footballers. We delve deeper into what exactly makes the Dutch prodigy unique, aside from his eye-catching shock of blond hair.

The turn of the millennium wasn’t particularly a favourable one in Barca’s history. Fresh from claiming their 16th La Liga title in 2000, the Blaugrana suffered a rapid slump. Bankruptcy and frequent managerial changes became the other of the day. All of a sudden, the all-powerful Catalan club struggled to keep up with the elites. Yet, none of these could hamper the meteoric rise of one of its brightest prospect, Xavi Hernández.

Barca’s predicaments lasted for another three years. About this time, Xavi Simons was born in Amsterdam to former Dutch player and Barcelona fan, Regillio. Undeterred by the club’s current ordeal, Regillio christened his new born after the Spanish midfield maestro, who perhaps was the sole shining spot in an otherwise blight Barca team. But it seemed as though the birth of the young Xavi brought good fortunes to the Nou Camp. As gradually, Barca got back to business, culminating in the league title in 2004.

Meanwhile, somewhere in a small village known as Rojales in Valencia, Xavi was already tracking the footsteps of his idol. At age three, he joined Villarreal youth ranks before fate brought him closer to the 2010 FIFA World Cup winner.

“He joined the system at Villarreal. They were very happy with his progress and wanted him in the academy system but he was aged six and already playing with their U9s. I thought it was too early for that. I didn’t want him playing in the U9s at six, so I said no. It was a week later when Barcelona called and wanted him to go to a trial.” Regillio was quoted by Daily Mail.

What makes him so special?

Many kids have curly blond hair these days but only a handful are born leaders. Well, Xavi happens to be one, who at all time looks to make things work around him. No wonder he’s been captain from the first day he stepped foot at the club. Not only that, he also got an utterly infectious winning mentality which has seen him and his team emerge victorious almost all the time.

Yes, he may not necessarily play in the Xavi Hernandez mould or evoke thoughts of Andrés Iniesta, yet Simons has shown to be truly something special. His aggressiveness, enthusiasm and ability to control the tempo of play, from the middle, while adding a dash of flair is simply phenomenal. He is one youngster with an intense mindset and a veteran footballer’s brain. The way he works for every single ball is astonishing, especially given his somewhat petite physical stature.

Interest from other clubs

Chelsea was the first side to register their interest for the teen sensation back in 2015. Reports in Spain suggested that the Blues’ scouts were so impressed with what they saw, that they offered his parents a mega-money deal to try to lure them into a move to London. However, Regillio turned down the offer in favour of remaining at Nou Camp. Other sides like Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Arsenal have reportedly enquired about the player.

Social media phenomenon

Not only is Xavi attracting so much attention on the pitch, but upstairs, somewhere in the cyber space. Unbelievable as it may seem, the 14-year-old, with over 500K Instagram followers, has more social media presence than many top footballers. More fascinating, he only joined the online service less than two years ago, in December 2015.
