Arsenal are considering backup options to Mustafi

Arsenal have been involved in talks with Valencia over the transfer of Shkodran Mustafi for quite some days now.

Last week, various reports suggested that the Gunners are closing in on the deal, and the German international should be an Arsenal player in the coming days.

However, the latest report from Sky Sports claims that Mustafi has agreed to join the North London club, but the club are still involved in negotiations with Valencia over the transfer fee for the player.

The report indicates that the Gunners don’t want to overspend on the defender as they are saving up the cash for a striker, and hence, they have identified backup options to Mustafi.

The Gunners have reportedly identified Omer Toprak of Bayer Leverkusen and Simon Kjaer of Fenerbahce as backup options to Mustafi.

Toprak is a 27-year-old centre-back who plays for the Turkey national team and joined Leverkusen in 2011. He has been a crucial player for the Bundesliga club since his arrival and has made 129 league appearances for them.

Meanwhile, Kjaer is a Denmark international and joined Fenerbahce from Lille in 2015. He signed a four-year deal with the Turkish club last summer for a reported transfer fee of €7.65 million.
