The Transfer Series: Three Players West Ham Should Sign In January

West Ham’s start to the season has been underlined by inconsistency which currently sees them sit just one point above the relegation zone in 17th place.

After last season’s 7th place finish, one would have expected the Hammers to harbour a secret ambition to finish fourth ( despite how unlikely it may have seemed going into the new season). There’s no way that’s happening now, though, as Slaven Bilic will be more concerned about avoiding a potential relegation battle.

Having signed a dozen players ahead of the new season, the new arrivals seem to have done more harm than good to West Ham with the likes of Simone Zaza, Andre Ayew or Gokhan Tore yet to register a goal this season.

The team’s presence in the attacking third appears to be in disarray – the midfield has also looked shaky thus far hence there remains a huge possibility that West Ham will be active in the transfer window.

Let’s take a look at a couple of players they’ve been linked to and the ones with the best chance of making their way to the London Stadium;

Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas

Fabregas has cemented his name amongst football’s greatest midfielder’s, having already achieved lots of success at the age of 29. He currently has 183 assists to his name in his club career to date following an impressive streak of trophy wins, although he’s found himself on the fringes at Chelsea recently and looks primed for an exit.

His two likeliest destinations are PSG and West Ham with Chelsea interested in swapping him for Marco Veratti.

It’s unlikely, though, that PSG will be keen on offloading one of their best midfield players over the last few seasons thus a move to West Ham remains on the cards for Fabregas.

The Spain international will undoubtedly add some much-needed zest and creativity in West Ham’s midfield taking some responsibility off Payet, who seems to be doing it all at West Ham these days.

Andrea Belotti

With Simone Zaza proving to be one of West Ham’s biggest flop acquisitions this season; Slaven Bilic may look to another Italian striker in the January transfer window, but this time, one with a proven record of scoring goals.

Andrea Belotti has been impressive for Torino thus far scoring eight goals in 11 Serie A appearances. West Ham most certainly needs a striker of his calibre to climb out of the bottom half of the table with the likes of Zaza, Ayew and Carroll proving to be unreliable.

Jonathan Calleri and Ashley Fletcher are available to feature up front for West Ham, but neither of them seems fit enough to spearhead the attack at the London Stadium.

Neven Subotic

West Ham could make a bid for Neven Subotic in the January transfer window with West Ham evidently in need of a solid defender. The Serbian Centre-back could potentially add a new dynamic to the Hammers’ defensive set-up.

Subotic came close to signing for Middlesbrough in the summer transfer window; hence he’s somewhat of a realistic option for West Ham seeing as Dortmund aren’t too keen on retaining his services.

He also admitted that a move away from Dortmund would suit his career thus paving the way for a team of West Ham’s stature to snap him up in January.

Having amassed years of experience at Dortmund, he could play an instrumental role in helping to solidify West Ham’s leaky defence as the Hammers currently have one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League.
