The Transfer Series: Three Players Chelsea Need To Sign In The Summer

Chelsea has looked good thus far - Conte’s decision to utilize a 3-4-3 formation has resonated with the fans and players alike as the club is currently playing some lovely football.

The win 5-0 win over Everton underlined Chelsea’s efficiency and elegance with the Blues failing to concede a goal in their last Premier League outing.

With the way they’re playing one would wonder if there’s a need to bring in players in the January transfer window. Though, due to the fierce competition at the top end of the table, Conte will be wise to use the winter window to his advantage by bringing in a centre-back and possibly two midfield players.

Oscar and Fabregas have been linked with moves elsewhere with the latter expected to leave the club in January and the former reportedly on the radar of many clubs ahead of next season.

Chelsea’s defense looks like it could use one extra defender, and possibly one that has some experience manning a back-three, with that said let’s take a look at three players the Blues could sign in January.

Leonardo Bonucci

Leonardo Bonucci

Bonucci was linked with Chelsea right from the moment Conte was announced as Guus Hiddink’s successor.

Chelsea was reportedly in contact with Juventus over the course of the summer concerning a move for the Italy international - rumors also circulated that Hazard would move to Juventus in a part-exchange deal for Bonucci, but as we all know a deal was never done.

Conte could attempt to sign Bonucci in January although it’s no secret that he’d cost Chelsea a large sum of money.

Gary Cahill has looked decent in defense for Chelsea, but he’s been average compared to David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta thus creating the possibility of a new defender arriving in January.

Bonucci is one of the world’s best defenders having led Juventus to successive Serie A titles.

Marco Veratti

Marco Verratti

With Cesc Fabregas and Oscar potentially leaving the club, Conte could look to PSG’s Marco Veratti to serve as a replacement. He would be an upgrade to Nemanja Matic, although it’s worth noting that Matic has been superb this season.

Conte was interested in signing Veratti in the summer but failed to broker a deal with PSG, but interest in the midfielder seems to have resurged as he’s reportedly amongst a couple of players that could make their way to Stamford Bridge.

Veratti is an excellent passer of the ball, and he’s also got the ability to shoot from range. His natural position is in the middle of the park, but he’s also quite adept at playing as an attacking midfielder.

Kostas Manolas

Kostas Manolas

Manolas could be an alternative to Bonucci with the Greek centre-back being a relatively cheaper and more realistic option. Roma has had a strong start to the league campaign as they currently sit second in the Serie A, but it looks increasingly unlikely that they’ll win the Italian top-flight this term due to Juventus’ spell of dominance.

On that front, Manolas could opt for a move to a Chelsea, a team with which he can win some major silverware. Manolas can put a stop to incoming attacks and can also chip in with headed goals from time to time.

At 25, he’s got a lot of years ahead of him and could potentially spend them at Chelsea should the London outfit table a bid for his services.
