The Transfer Series: Three Players Arsenal Needs To Sign In January

Arsenal has enjoyed an excellent start to the season as they currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, just two points adrift of Liverpool who now occupies pole position.

The Gunners seem different this term, there is a certain exquisiteness about their style of play which has seen them dominate against teams more often than they would in any other season. That has been down to the performances of the key players in the side, most notably Alexis Sanchez.

But as is always the case with Arsenal, the festive period is when they experience a dip in form which is due in large part to a plethora of injuries to important first team players.

Wenger understands the importance of utilizing the January transfer window to improve squad depth even though he’s not too pleased with the fact that there are two transfer windows in the first place.

Without further ado let’s take a look at three players Arsenal needs to sign;

Leandro Pardes

Leandro Pardes has been a revelation for Roma this season despite having just earned a starting berth. He arrived at Roma from Boca Juniors in 2015 but soon found himself loaned out to Empoli to gain some first team experience.

He’s been frequently utilized by Luciano Spaletti as he’s only missed out on two games this season. The 22-year-old is a gifted passer of the ball, and he’s also capable of doing some dirty work in the middle of the park.

Pardes is yet to receive a national team cap although it seems to be a matter of time before Eduardo Bauza invites him to the National team.

Arsenal already boasts of the midfield talents of Granit Xhaka, Aaron Ramsey, Francis Coquelin and of course Elneny. In the midst of what seems to be a heated title challenge, Wenger needs a midfield player to act as a rotation option if Arsenal makes it through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, which looks ever so likely.

Chris Smalling

Smalling’s future at Manchester United is under massive doubt following some comments Mourinho made after the game at Swansea which seemed to be directed at Smalling.

Arsene Wenger has always been a huge admirer of Smalling and could attempt to sign the player that was once on his radar.

Wenger already has a strong defense with Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny manning the back-four, although Smalling would be an excellent addition to the North London outfit’s backline.

Ante Coric

Wenger is very much into bargain buys and could potentially acquire the next Luka Modric for just £8.5m.

Ante Coric is a technically gifted midfield player capable of giving any defender a tough time on the pitch. His versatility will make him a valuable asset for Arsenal as he’s capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, a central midfielder, and an attacking midfielder.

He’s comparable to Santi Cazorla at Arsenal due to his ability to dictate the flow of games. Arsenal already has a capable bunch of midfielders, but a move for Coric would be viable seeing as he’s still a young lad with loads of potential.

The 19-year-old midfielder plays for Dinamo Zagreb and has been a key member of the side’s first team set-up since 2014, the year he made broke onto the scene as a professional footballer.
