The Transfer Series: Three Players Manchester United Needs To Sign In January

Despite going into the new season with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba in the roster, Manchester United have found it difficult to keep up with the rest of the title contenders and thus find themselves in 6th place in the League standings.

Their absence from the top four can be attributed to the team’s underperforming players in attack, defence and midfield.

It’s quite likely that Jose Mourinho will offload some players in January seeing as a lot of them aren’t good enough to earn a starting berth at a team of Manchester United’s calibre.

Rojo, Fellaini, Depay and Schweinsteiger could be on their way out of Manchester United in January as per reports circulating across the media. But despite the need to replace some of the players that may be leaving the club in the winter window, Mourinho is fully aware of the fact that he has to bring in quality midfielders in a bid to revive the Red Devils’ hopes of finishing within the top four.

Here are three players Manchester United needs to sign in January;

Diego Godin

Diego Godin

Manchester United’s defence has been quite shaky recently with De Gea proving to be the team’s last-gasp saving grace on many occasions. Chris Smalling has defended poorly this season with Eric Bailly being the only bright spark in United’s back-four.

Every team needs a defensive leader, and it’s quite clear that the Red Devils' lacks a player that can assume such a role, Diego Godin, though, could make a switch to United and become the team’s main centre-back.

A natural organiser in defence, Godin is one of the best defenders in the La Liga and arguably one of Atletico Madrid’s best players.

The past four seasons have seen Diego Godin become one of the most highly-rated defenders in world football having played a crucial role in Atletico’s rise to Prominence in Europe.

Aside from being a solid defender, he’s also capable of scoring goals, especially from set-pieces due to his superior aerial ability. Mourinho is reportedly set to table a £30m bid for Godin, but it’s uncertain whether a fee of that magnitude will be enough to prompt Atletico to sanction the transfer.

Yannick Carrasco

Reports from ESPN claims Mourinho will look to sign Carrasco in January in a bid to add some much-needed ingenuity and pace to the squad.

Jose Mourinho reportedly sent scouts to watch Carrasco play in a fixture between the Belgian national team and the Netherlands.

Carrasco is capable of playing on either flank, but he’ll probably be utilised on the left side in place of Anthony Martial.

Carrasco is technically proficient and can attack teams from a variety of angles due to his “3-dimensional” style of play.

Should United manage to sign Carrasco, they’ll certainly see an improvement in the rate at which chances are created with the Belgium international capable of contributing to different phases of play.

Manchester United could sign Isco in January as a direct replacement for Wayne Rooney with the latter seemingly past his prime.

Isco has fallen down the pecking order at Real Madrid thus a move to Manchester United will be quite viable for both him and the club.

It will reportedly take a bid in the region of £25m to acquire the Spain international’s services.

Isco is well known for his creativity and a keen eye for a pass, he’s quite similar to Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil although his game time has been somewhat limited at the Santiago Bernabeu in recent times.
