Chelsea must sign

Top 3 players Chelsea must sign to challenge for the Champions League

Chelsea has 630 left to play in the Premier League this season; the Blues have a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League. It’s fair to say that Chelsea will qualify for the Champions League next season. The big question is, how far can they go in Europe? Can they win the Champions League? If they are to stand a chance, then Chelsea must sign a few quality players.

Mathematically, Chelsea needs two more wins to secure a top four finish. They need five more to win the title. That’s assuming the teams below them don’t stop winning. In football, things can change pretty quickly and nothing is set in stone. If you cast your mind to this same month in 2012. Manchester United had an eight-point lead at the top of the league in the first week of April. However, a run of disappointing results allowed City to close the gap and win the title on goal-difference in an exhilarating finish to a Premier League season.

Whether that same scenario would play out between Chelsea and Tottenham this season is an argument we’ve discussed here. Regardless of who eventually wins the title this season, Chelsea will definitely be among the teams who will represent the England in the Champions League next term. Many of the Chelsea faithful simply cannot wait to see their club return to the European football’s biggest competition.

Antonio Conte must’ve drawn up his list of summer transfer targets already. However, if the Blues must challenge for the Champions League or win it, Chelsea must sign these three players.

Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea will need the services of a top striker who can take the goalscoring burden off Diego Costa. The Blues already have a Michy Batshuayi in their ranks. But it’s no secret that Antonio Conte doesn’t rate him and hence he has no future at Chelsea. One player who can fill any goalscoring void is Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian powerhouse has proved his goalscoring prowess in the Premier League and is desperate for a bigger stage than Everton to shine on.

Romelu Lukaku is only just twenty-three but his goalscoring achievements in the Premier League is quite staggering. The former West Brom striker has progressed exponentially since leaving Chelsea in 2012. Lukaku has become Everton’s top goalscorer in the Premier League era and has scored twenty-three league goals this term. The former Anderlecht striker has been nominated for the award of both the PFA Player of the year and PFA Young Player of the year this season. Chelsea must sign the Premier League top-scorer to stand a chance of competing favorably with Europe’s best teams in the Champions League.

Rumour has it that a deal for the transfer of Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea is almost done. If Chelsea must challenge for the Champions League title next season, those rumors must come true.

Chelsea must sign Marco Verratti

Chelsea needs to buy a highly combatant midfielder who can take a match by the scruff of the neck and turn things in their favor. Marco Verratti is a player who can do that comfortably. The former Pescara midfielder has helped Paris Saint-Germain win four Ligue 1 titles in four years.

Verratti would be a super signing for Antonio Conte’s Chelsea
The Italian has been in fine form for Paris Saint-Germain despite their rather indifferent season. He is regarded as one of Europe’s most talented midfielders. The diminutive playmaker will be a massive addition to any team he joins and Chelsea needs him if they are to succeed in Europe. Despite his petite stature, Verratti has performed better in midfield than Chelsea’s duo of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic.

Marco Verratti has played twenty games (1453 minutes) in Ligue 1 this term. Verratti has a superior pass completion rate (89%) to both Matic (88%) who has played 2269 minutes and Fabregas (84) who has played 950 minutes. Verratti is also better regarding tackles won. The Italian midfielder has won forty-five tackles as opposed to Fabregas (20) and Matic (35).

However, Cesc Fabregas has outperformed Verratti regarding goals scored and chances created. The former Barcelona man has scored four league goals, provided seven assists and created thirty-nine chances. This is opposed to Verratti’s two league goals, four assists and thirty-two chances created.
Verratti would easily fit into Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 system and would help Chelsea mount a strong challenge for the Champions League. Whether PSG would be willing to sell Verratti to Chelsea is, however, a debate for another day.

Leonardo Bonucci

Chelsea must sign a top class defender if they are to challenge for the Champions League title. Antonio Conte needs a quality defender to replace an outgoing John Terry and also provide stiffer competition for places with the likes Gary Cahill, David Luiz and Cesar Azpilicueta.

One defender who can provide that sort of defensive cover is Leonardo Bonucci. The 29-year-old Italian defender has worked with Antonio Conte at both club and national team level and understands the mental and technical requirements of working with Conte. Bonucci is a physical defender who is technically gifted and has plenty Champions League experience.
