Premier League Matchday 12: Liverpool Slips to second, Sunderland Leaves Rock-Bottom

The weekend in the English top-flight kicked-off with a mouth-watering encounter between Manchester United and Arsenal. Despite being the away side in the fixture, Arsenal were the favorites to claim all three points due to the Red Devils’ recent shaky results in the Premier League.

Goals from Juan Mata and Olivier Giroud saw the game end as a 1-1 draw, not a surprising result, but a disappointing one. Notwithstanding the score line, the performances from both sides were great, although, Manchester United was arguably the better side.

Yaya Toure returned to Manchester City with a bang as he scored two goals for the Citizens which saw them pick up a 2-1 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Aguero seemed to be off his game, but thanks to Toure, City managed to get the three points in the bag which sees them sit at third in the Premier League table.

Everton played out a surprising 1-1 draw as Gylfi Sigurdsson fired Swansea onto a point at Goodison Park. The Iceland international opened the scoring in the 41st minute thanks to a well-struck penalty – Everton’s equalizer came courtesy of Seamus Coleman the 89th minute.

Liverpool failed to find the back of the net against Southampton on Saturday in a game which seemed to be frustrating for both sets of supporters, especially Liverpool fans seeing as the Reds have been on somewhat of a goal spree so far. The game ended goalless, and Liverpool now sits in second place behind Chelsea, who picked up a hard-fought 1-0 win against Middlesbrough on Sunday to launch them to the top of the Premier League.

Nathan Ake led Bournemouth to a 1-0 win over Stoke City following his goal in the 26th minute. Stoke was presented with a chance to get into the game with a penalty in the 49th minute, but Bojan Kirkic failed to make the most of that opportunity, thus resulting in Stoke’s loss.

Sunderland thumped relegation rivals Hull City in what turned out to be “Just another match” for the Black Cats. Jermain Defoe scored a stunning solo goal while Victor Anichebe continued his fine form with a brace on occasion.

Elsewhere, the Champions’ woes continued as they suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Watford. Watford’s opener had come through a 24-second strike from Capoue before Roberto Pereyra scored an exquisite curler in the 12th minute. Mahrez pulled one back for Leicester in the 15th minute of the game.

Tottenham secured a 3-2 win over West Ham despite the Hammers’ putting in an excellent performance. West Ham’s defense was weak, to say the least, but they looked good in midfield.

Antonio had opened the scoring before Winks pegged one back. A penalty came about, and Lanzini put West Ham back in front with a great Penalty. What followed after was a brace from Harry Kane which more or less sums up West Ham’s season.
