Premier League defender set to join Man Utd

Man Utd seemed to have won the pursuit of Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte.

London Evening Standard claims that the Portuguese defender is set on a move to Old Trafford prompting Arsenal to give up their interest in the player.

The Gunners are in search of a centre-back at the moment, and the 32-year-old was one of the names on their wish list. They have been primarily linked with a move for Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi but have failed to reach an agreement with the La Liga club until now.

Meanwhile, United have also been looking for an experienced centre-back and manager Jose Mourinho is confident that his compatriot Fonte can do the job at Old Trafford.

Fonte has been an important player for the Saints ever since their promotion to the Premier League. He was also a commanding presence in the Portugal national team’s defence during their recent Euro Cup success.

It is suggested that the South Coast club have offered a new contract, but he is keen on a move away from the club after spending almost six years with them.

He is reportedly valued at £10m by the Saints, and it is expected that they will allow him to leave if United make an offer for him.
