La Liga Matchday 22 Roundup: Sevilla Maintain Title Bid

Sevilla maintained their title challenge thanks to a late strike from Joaquin Correa who came off the bench to score the match-winner for the Seville outfit.

Sevilla took on Las Palmas during the weekend and whilst Las Palmas threatened to hold out for a draw, Jorge Sampaoli’s side had other ideas as they managed to grab a slender win to keep pace with Barcelona and Real Madrid who occupy second and first place respectively.

The gap at the top of the table is quite small at the moment with Barcelona boasting of a two-point cushion and Madrid sitting on top with a three point gap along with two games yet to be played.

Villarreal’s slump continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Malaga. The Yellow Submarine started the season in superb form as they won games for fun and looked primed for a place in the Champions League next season.

On that front, though, things look bleak for Villarreal as they’ve been taking blows to their top four ambitions in the past month.

Charles Dias opened the scoring for Malaga before Bruno Soriano scored a spot-kick a few minutes after the hour mark. Roberto Soriano was sent off in the 70th-minute which reduced Villarreal’s threat in front of goal due to their depleted numbers.

Atletico Madrid’s win sees Villarreal sit six points behind them in 6th place.

Atletico edged a victory over Celta Vigo, a side who have shown that they’re more than capable of taking on the La Liga’s big boys.

Diego Simeone’s side left it late as they bagged two goals in the game’s final four minutes.

Gustavo Cabral opened the scoring for Celta Vigo after five minutes before Fernando Torres brought the scores level with a spectacular overhead kick.

Ex-Manchester City man, John Guidetti restored Celta’s lead but Yannick Carrasco had got Atleti back in the game with a superb strike. Star striker Antoine Griezmann scored Atletico's final goal of the game as the match ended 3-2.

Sporting Gijon hammered Leganes 2-0 in a game that had a significant effect on the relegation battle. Goals from Roberto Canella and Burgui saw Gijon coast to victory.

Gijon currently sits in 17th-place in the league standings and are two points clear of the relegation zone. The battle to beat the drop is turning into a heated one with just a few points separating the teams at the bottom of the table.

Alaves could not be helped as Barcelona thumped them 6-0. The first half ended in a modest 2-0 scoreline for the Blaugrana with Neymar and Suarez getting on the scoresheet.

The second-half, though, saw Messi get his name on the scoresheet before Ruano Alexis scored an own goal to take Barca’s tally up to four. Ivan Rakitic scored Barca’s fifth before Luis Suarez sealed the game with his second goal of the game and Barcelona’s sixth.

Barca sits just one point behind Real Madrid who also grabbed a win during the weekend.

Osasuna was no match for Zidane’s men as Real Madrid secured a 3-1 win over the league’s rock-bottom side. Cristiano Ronaldo was on the scoresheet along with Isco and Lucas Vazquez as Real Madrid garnered momentum ahead of their clash with Napoli.

Osasuna, though, put up a decent showing capped by a goal from Sergio Leon.

Real Betis and Valencia played out a goalless draw whilst Real Sociedad maintained their Champions League bid with a 2-1 win over Espanyol.

Goals from Carlos Vela and Asier Illaramendi fired Sociedad to the victory with Hernan Perez scoring Espanyol’s consolation goal.

Athletic Bilbao secured a hard-fought win over Deportivo La Coruna. Emre Colak opened the scoring two minutes before half-time, but Bilbao took advantage of the second half as Iker Muniain and Aritz Aduriz helped Bilbao to the three points.

Eibar put up a magnificent display against Granada as they grabbed a massive 4-0 win. Adrian Gonzalez opened the scoring with a penalty before Sergi Enrich bagged a goal in the 39th-minute.

Ivan Ramis and Pedro Leon rounded off the scoring for Eibar as they won 4-0 at the Municipal de Ipurua stadium.
