La Liga Matchday 17 Roundup: Messi Scores Stunning Free-kick to Earn Barca Draw

Barcelona was held to a 1-1 draw by Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica with goals from Nicola Sansone and Lionel Messi cancelling each other out.

After a goalless first-half, Alexandre Pato played a precise pass to Sansone during a breakaway, and the Italian forward duly converted it.

Barca had to wait till the 90th-minute to score an equaliser, and it turned out to be worth the wait. Leo Messi scored a sublime free-kick that was seemingly out of reach for Sergio Asenjo.

Real Madrid completed the 5-0 thumping of Granada courtesy of goals from Isco (2), Benzema, Ronaldo and Casemiro. As things stand, Zidane’s side are four points clear at the top, with a game in hand.

Atletico Madrid got back to winning ways thanks to goals from Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann. Atleti were seemingly on a downward spiral before the winter break, but Griezmann’s return to form could see them secure a Champions League spot come the end of the season.

Las Palmas picked up a 1-0 win over Sporting Gijon courtesy of Nabil El Zhar’s 55th-minute strike, while Athletic Bilbao was held to a goalless draw by Alaves.

Elsewhere, Real Betis hammered Leganes as they picked up a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Ruben Castro and Cristiano Piccini.

Celta Vigo proved to be too hot to handle with Malaga succumbing to a 3-1 defeat as Iago Aspas, Daniel Wass and Andreu Fontas were all on target at Estadio Municipal de Balaidos.

Malaga’s consolation goal came through Daniel Wass’ own goal in the closing stages of the tie.

Sevilla travelled to Estadio Aneota and came back with the three points as Jorge Sampaoli’s side grabbed a 4-0 win over Real Sociedad. Wissam Ben Yedder scored a hat-trick whilst Pablo Sarabia was also on target for the Seville outfit.

Espanyol and Deportivo played out a 1-1 draw with goals from Gerard Moreno and Celso Borges cancelling each other out.

The best game from the matchday was arguably Osasuna’s 3-3 draw with Valencia. Osasuna scored three equalisers as they managed to salvage a point thanks to a sensational late goal from Carlos Clerc.

Munir opened the scoring for Valencia before Oriol Rirera clawed one back for Osasuna. Rirera then scored an own goal giving Valencia a 2-1 lead, but Roberto Torres’ 62nd-minute strike saw the home side draw level.

Martin Montoya scored what seemed to be Valencia’s winner in the 73rd-minute. Dani Parejo then missed a penalty which more or less motivated Osasuna to get back into the game, and they did, with Clerc’s 90th-minute effort.
