Juventus 3-0 win

Five masterminds of Juventus 3-0 win against Barcelona

In the first Champions League quarter final fixture played in Turin on Tuesday, Juventus proved their mettle by upsetting Catalan giants, Barcelona. Juventus 3-0 win against Barcelona was the most unlikely results expected. However, the Juventus players stood up to be counted and helped the Old Lady, record a memorable victory against the 2006 Champions League winners.

Beating Barcelona is always a big deal. No matter which club does it; be it a big club or a small club. Each time a club tastes victory against Barcelona, it’s big news! Juventus grabbed some of those headlines last night when they picked up an unlikely victory over the Catalan giants. However, that victory was made possible by a few key men for Juventus. In football, every victory is attributed to the combined effort of the entire team, but some players do stand out which is why there’s a Man Of The Match award to be won.

In the game between Juventus and Barcelona at the Juventus Stadium, a few players made it happen for Juventus. Here are five heroes in Juventus 3-0 win against Barcelona.

#5 – Gianluigi Buffon

Ageless Gianluigi Buffon right? Of course, he makes the cut. The longest-serving goalkeeper in the history of Italian football was on hand to produce some brilliant saves that kept his side in the game. In the 22nd minute, with the score still at one-nil, Lionel Messi sought to produce some magic. The Argentine superstar, slid the ball to Andres Iniesta, round the back in a defence-splitting pass. But Buffon stood like a rock to deny Iniesta from range. Barcelona battled hard to get such a game-changing opportunity, but just couldn’t. On rare occasions when they did, Gianluigi Buffon stood in the way. Buffon also made a super save after Suarez had beat Bonucci with a swift turn.

The 39-year-old Buffon was everywhere. He coordinated his defense brilliantly, made the required punches and saves. In the end, Buffon kept a well-deserved clean sheet. Juventus will need a repeat performance from Buffon as they seek to avoid the same quicksand that sunk PSG at the Camp Nou.

#4 – Leonardo Bonucci

Leonardo Bonucci was superb at the back in Juventus 3-0 win . The Italian defender ensured that Luis Suarez was tame all evening. Suarez was bullied everywhere he went by the tireless Bonucci. It wasn’t all rosy for Bonucci by the way. In the 68th minute, Luis Suarez received one of those Messi-genius passes; the Uruguayan spun swiftly, leaving Bonucci for dead, before unleashing a shot that was saved by an outstretched Buffon.

Regardless, Bonucci had a wonderful outing all round. He stayed cool, composed and played with poise. His understanding partnership with Chiellini is worthy of being envied.

#3 – Giorgio Chiellini

Giorgio Chiellini is an absolute defensive rock! I’ve watched him critically in many games and I’ve been unable to fault him in any way. The towering Italian was in blistering form in Juventus 3-0 win against Barcelona. Chiellini was a composed figure throughout the game. His partnership with Bonucci was enough to keep out the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, and Neymar from making any sort of meaningful impact.

Ten minutes into the second half, Giorgio Chiellini brushed aside Javier Mascherano to head in Miralem Pjanic corner. Capping off a brilliant defensive display with a goal, was the final star that completed a five-star display from Chiellini.

#2 – Sami Khedira

Sami Khedira put up a man of the match display and could’ve won it but for Dybala’s brilliance. The German defensive midfielder could be seen challenging for every ball, making vital tackles, key passes and runs. Khedira brought his El Clasico experience to the fore and helped his team pick up a resounding victory. Sami Khedira was simply tireless all night.

Khedira could’ve been culpable for a Barcelona equaliser when Lionel Messi robbed him of the ball close to the area, but the resulting goal was ruled out for offside. That would be the only time Khedira put a foot wrong all evening.

#1 – Paulo Dybala

Paulo Dybala was the man of the night in Juventus 3-0 win at home. The 23-year-old Argentine attacker showed Argentina exactly what they were missing by not calling him up for the national team. In the game against Barcelona, Dybala was the clinical attacker Juventus needed up front for the big kill. By the 22nd minute, Dybala had already grabbed his brace in spectacular fashion. He went on to torment the Barcelona defense all evening. The diminutive attacker was later substituted, with the Turin crowd chanting his name.
Juventus will be counting on another Dybala-inspired performance as they travel to see off the tie at the Camp Nou in a fortnight.
