English football season kicks off as Fulham hosts Newcastle on Friday

We won’t be seeing any Premier League action until August 13, but the new season of English football kicks off this Friday.

Fulham will host Newcastle United at Craven Cottage on Friday night to mark the beginning of what promises to be one of the most competitive seasons in Championship’s history.

The Magpies, managed by Rafa Benitez, are the favourites to win the league this season. Meanwhile, the Londoners will be looking to improve on their 20th-place finish under Slaviša Jokanović.

Other notable fixtures from the weekend include the clash between Derby County and Brighton at iPro Stadium and Aston Villa’s trip to Sheffield Wednesday.

Villa, managed by Roberto De Matteo, are also favourites to win promotion come May.

There also have been other notable managerial appointments in the second tier of Championship football. Reading City have appointed former Manchester United defender Jap Staam while Leeds United have appointed former Swansea City manager Gary Monk at the top of the helm. Meanwhile, former Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson has made his return to football management and will be in charge of Derby County.

As far as I can remember, this will be the first time that two Champions League-winning managers will be plying their trade in the second tier of English football.

The upcoming season promises to be one of the most competitive ones in the recent history, and we surely can’t wait for the fun to begin.
