Edin Džeko has been a man on fire for Roma this season

With another Italian Serie A season almost coming to wraps, one player who has shone like a million stars is Edin Dzeko. The Bosnian international has rediscovered his best goalscoring form for AS Roma.

When Edin Dzeko transferred to Roma in the summer of 2015, it was a move aimed at lifting Džeko’s career from the nadir it was at the time. However, the move to Roma has proved to be much better for Edin Džeko than initially envisaged. Edin Džeko has blazed the trail in the Serie A and he’s even set a new goalscoring record at Roma.

Edin Dzeko – the rise to grace

It was not until 2007 that Edin Džeko would surface in the crème de la crème of European football. That was the year he joined VFL Wolfsburg and that same year, he established himself as a mainstay in the first team. However, in 2009, Edin Džeko showed the world how much of a deadly striker he was. His partnership with Brazilian striker Grafite was insurmountable in all of Europe. Džeko himself, scored 26 goals and provided 10 assists in 32 games in that 2008/2009 season to help Wolfsburg win the league.

When Edin Džeko eventually left Wolfsburg in 2011, he had made a niche for himself and Manchester City was happy to break the bank for him.

A bad patch at Manchester City

After 130 league matches, he had scored 50 goals for Manchester City. Although that was a fairly good return for a striker when put into perspective; Džeko had endured some dry spells such as the 2012/2013 season where he could only muster 14 goals in 32 games – same as the season before.

Edin Džeko also struggled to get playing time at Manchester City – this is something that greatly stifled his career at Manchester City. Of the 130 league matches he played for Manchester City, 56 of those games, he appeared as a substitute. In the 2014/2015 season, he could only muster four league goals for Manchester City. As he rapidly approached 30, it was clear, that Edin Džeko might never fulfill his potential with Manchester City and hence a move away from the Etihad was desperately required.

Edin Džeko rediscovers himself at Roma

In the summer of 2015, rumors became true when Edin Džeko completed a loan transfer to Italian Serie A side, AS Roma. Following that transfer, it seemed like Edin Dzeko had transferred his Manchester City woes to Roma – given he only found the net eight times all season. However, despite Rudi García, the man who lured Edin Džeko to Roma getting fired; Dzeko opted to stay on and prove himself in the Italian capital.

When Luciano Spalletti was named Roma’s manager in 2016, his priority was to get a proven centre-forward for the Roma team. But first things first, Spalletti was to complete the season with the striker he had on ground – Edin Džeko. Before the end of the 2015-2016 season, Džeko had scored a few vital goals for Luciano Spalletti’s side. Given Džeko’s goal-return Spalletti decided to stick with him and elected to make him his main centre-forward.

The turn of the 2016-17 season heralded new beginnings for Edin Džeko. The Bosnian striker has absolutely blazed the trail in the Serie A. He was also in great form in Europe when Roma was still in contention for the Europa League title. Luciano Spalletti must be elated to have a striker who is showing the best form of his career.

This season, Edin Džeko has scored 23 Serie A goals for Roma. The lanky Bosnian has also provided 3 assists for his teammates. Edin Džeko has a goal ratio of 107 minutes per goal. Džeko’s goal-return makes him joint-top scorer of the Serie A – Andrea Belotti of Torino also has 23 goals.

Edin Džeko’s aerial prowess has been put to good use this season – the former Manchester City man has scored 34 headed goals this term. Luciano Spalletti must be given some credit for helping Džeko reinvigorate his career. The Italian tactician has put a lot of faith in Džeko and the Bosnian has repaid that faith with goals. Guys like Mohammed Salah also deserve a worthy mention. The Egyptian has been responsible for assisting a plethora of Edin Džeko’s goals this season.

Edin Dzeko has been absolutely on fire for Roma this season. He has already scored more goals (33) than any player for in AS Roma history has, in s single season – that for me is incredible.
