Chelsea failed in their bid for Alessio Romagnoli

Chelsea’s bid for AC Milan defender turned down

Chelsea have been linked with an unsuccessful bid for AC Milan centre-back Alessio Romagnoli.

Sky Italy claims that the Rossoneri have turned down a £30m bid from the Blues for the 21-year-old.

The report states that Milan are not keen on selling the Italy U21 international this summer.

Romagnoli signed for the Milan club from AS Roma in a £21m move last summer. He went on to make 34 league starts in his debut season for Milan.

The youngster has been defined as the best upcoming defensive talent in Italian football at the moment and have been compared with the likes of Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva.

The West London are actively looking for a centre-back in the current transfer window.

Manager Antonio Conte on Saturday pointed out that his side is need of defensive reinforcements before the transfer window shuts down on August 31.

“If you look now at our squad, we have only five defenders – four that started today and an academy player Ola Aina,” said Conte after the win over Watford.

“Ola is very good – he has great potential – but with any young player, you must work to put them in the first team. Sure, he has a good future.

“If one defender is injured or banned, then we are in trouble, but the club and me we know this and we are talking every day to improve the squad.”

The Blues had initially targeted Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly, but it appears now that they have given up the pursuit of the Senegal international because of his club’s reluctance to sell him.
