Bundesliga Matchday 18 Roundup: Alaba Seals Bayern Win

Bayern Munich retained their place at the top of the Bundesliga table following a hard-fought win over Werder Bremen on Saturday. Bremen now sits closer to relegation with just one point standing between them and 16th place.

Arjen Robben opened the scoring with a goal on the 60th-minute before David Alaba found the back of the net right on the stroke of half-time. Kruse began the fightback for Bremen as he bagged a goal early in the second 45 taking the scores to 2-1, but the scores were to remain as thus with Bayern holding out for the vital win.

Hoffenheim fell to a disheartening 2-1 defeat away at title hopefuls, RB Leipzig. Amiri was on target for Hoffenheim as the away side got off to a flyer against Leipzig but goals from Timo Werner and Marcel Sabitzer ensured Leipzig maintained their title challenge.

With just three points separating Ralph Hassenhuettl’s side from Bayern Munich, Leipzig will be keen on keeping pace with the league leaders.

Hertha Berlin dropped to 6th-place this season as they suffered their fourth league defeat in five games. Freiburg proved too much to handle as Hertha’s dismal sequence continued following goals from Janik Herber and Nils Petersen which earned Freiburg the three points against Hertha Berlin in a 2-1 win.

Hertha’s lone goal came courtesy of Julian Schieber who bagged a goal in the 88th-minute of the game.

Mainz secured a crucial 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund who have had a hard time in the Bundesliga in recent weeks. Danny Latza headed home a late equaliser to cancel out Marco Reus’ 3rd-minute strike as Dortmund had to settle for a point.

Schurrle nearly found the net for Dortmund on one occasion in the second-half, but his shot was denied by Jonas Lossl’s quick reflexes.

Ingolstadt and Hamburg faced off in a game poised to have a say in the proceedings at the bottom of the table. Ingolstadt managed to secure a 3-1 win which saw them climb out of the bottom two.

Pascal Gross, Markus Suttner and Almog Cohen were on target for Ingolstadt with Gotoku Sakai scoring Hamburg’s consolation goal as the away side sees them sit in 17th place.

Darmstadt remains at the very depths of the Bundesliga following their 6-1 thrashing at the hands of a Cologne side that showed no signs of slowing down. The win was Cologne’s first since November; thus, their attacking display has to be applauded as they thoroughly thumped Darmstadt.

Yuya Osako bagged a brace, Aytac Sulu scored an own goal, whilst Modeste, Jojic and Rudnevs were on target as Cologne put six goals past Darmstadt’s leaky defence. Sidney Sam’s scored a deftly executed spot-kick which stood as the home side’s lone goal.

Elsewhere, Wolfsburg suffered a 2-1 defeat against Augsburg at the Volkswagen Arena as Valerien Ismael’s side failed to extend their previous three-game winning streak.

Mario Gomez opened the scoring for Wolfsburg before Hamit Altintop scored the equaliser for Augsburg. Dominik Kohr scored the winner for Augsburg as Wolfsburg remains in danger of getting relegated should they fail to recover from this loss.

Bayer Leverkusen were defeated at the Bay Arena by Borussia Monchengladbach who seem to be climbing the Bundesliga table. Leverkusen’s sporadic form continued as they failed to keep hold of a two-goal lead they acquired following strikes from Jonathan Tah and Javier Hernandez.

Stindl bagged a brace whilst Raffael scored Gladbach’s 3rd goal of the game as they secured a 3-2 win.

Alexander Meier scored the only goal as Frankfurt overcame Schalke’s challenge on Friday night. Schalke were on the front foot for the most of the second-half, but Frankfurt still managed to hold on to their 1-0 lead as they claimed the victory.
