The Best Goals From Each of Europe’s Big 5 Leagues in the 2016-17 Season

Every goal is a goal, true, but not every goal leaves eyes rolling, tongues wagging and lungs screaming. If you’re a fan of epic football match commentary you must’ve heard your favourite announcer yell as he searches for the right adjective to qualify a wonderful goal – you can’t compare such goals to tap-ins and simple headers, can you?

Last season, there was plenty of such goals on display across Europe. Here’s a quick roundup of the ones that sparked a call to the podium.

Premier League – Emre Can

Yes, he Can! On the first day of May 2017, Emre Can scored an absolutely unfathomable goal against Watford. While the Hornets were perhaps patting themselves on the back for doing a good job shutting Liverpool out in the first half, the German had other plans.

A superlative delivery to the edge of the box by Lucas Leiva was met by a stinging acrobatic effort by Can, which flew unhindered into the top corner, leaving Gomes bemused in the Watford goal.

There was other outstanding goals in the 2016-17 Premier League season but Can’s screamer was enough to win the Goal of the Season award. You can take a peek of Can’s goal below.

La Liga – Fernando Torres

Fernando Torres’ sojourn in London cast aspersions on the striker’s abilities, but he has since found renaissance following his return to boyhood club, Atletico Madrid.

For the just concluded La Liga season, El Niño scored a goal that caused an eruption of roar at the Vicente Calderón. The stunning goal came in Atleti’s pulsating encounter against Celta Vigo. With his back to the goal, the former Chelsea #9 volleyed the ball in the net – the goalkeeper could only watch his net bulge.

Torres’s goal was voted La Liga goal of the season.

Ligue 1 – Memphis Depay

The Manchester United castaway had something to cheer following his move to Lyon. Memphis Depay scored a goal for the purists in March to clinch the goal of the season in France.

The Dutchman spun in the centre circle and powered in an effort that beat Toulouse teenage keeper, Alban Lafont who had been spotted off his line.

The former Ajax man would later admit that he didn’t even see the ball go in. Depay won Ligue 1 goal of the 2016-17 season following a poll where he pulled 42% of the votes.

Bundesliga – Nabil Bentaleb

Nabil Bentaleb chose his moment carefully to announce his arrival to the Bundesliga. The Algerian who had struggled to make an impact in the Premier League was phenomenal for Schalke and proved this by scoring a cracking goal that was voted the Bundesliga goal of the season.

For a moment, Augsburg’s WWK Arena seem to go silent as Bentaleb ran down the touchline to celebrate his scorching opener.

Serie A – Radja Nainggolan

There was no official goal of the season award conferred on any Serie A goalscorer last season. Nonetheless, my personal favorite is Radja nainggolan’s sumptuous effort against Inter in February.

The Belgian picked up the ball the ball in his own half, ran 20 yards and then unleashed an unstoppable 25-yard effort that flew right in. That goal was duly voted, Roma’s goal of the season.
